ICM (Motion)
Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) is a technique that combines slow shutter speeds while intentionally moving the camera during the exposure. A painterly effect is created by blurring the elements in the image. The photographer is literally painting with light which is exactly what “photography” translates to.
I first began employing the technique on a trip home from Fort Worth. My wife was driving at the time and I began using an app on my iPhone called ProCam that had a slow shutter mode and captured images in front of me through the windshield as the world was passing by. I often refer to these images as motion studies.
ICM is another form of abstraction that reveals a world to my viewers that is invisible to us and can be very otherworldly.
